Terracina o Moscato di Terracina

The Protected Designation of Origin" Terracina or Moscato di Terracina " is a white wine produced in four types: Dry, Lovely, Passito and Spumante.


Grapes

For the production of Terracina, at least 85% of the grapes must come from the Moscato di Terracina vine, while the remaining 15% (maximum) may consist of other white grapes, suitable for cultivation in Lazio. The exception is sparkling wine, for which a pure vinification is prescribed, with 100% of the grapes from the specific vine.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

746 / 2048 Both the dry Terracina wine and the amabile (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11. 5% vol. ) have an appearance ranging from straw yellow to slightly golden. The smell is characteristic for both, fragrant for the dry and intense for the sweet. The first one, moreover, has a dry taste and with typical aromas of the vine, the second one is pleasant and characteristic. The passito (15. 5% vol. ), however, is golden yellow, embellished with amber reflections, the smell is characteristic and is combined with a sweet taste, pleasant and velvety. Finally, the sparkling wine (11% vol. ) is distinguished by the clarity of its pale straw colour, enriched by a fine and persistent foam; the aroma is fragrant and characteristic; the taste is aromatic, harmonious and fresh. .


Grape production area

The production area covers the southern part of the Lazio coast, characterised by a hilly profile and a Mediterranean climate.


Specificity and historical notes

The viticulture of the area of Terracina, already known and appreciated in Roman times, experienced a long period of stagnation that ended only in the Renaissance when the first land reclamation, by Pope Leo X, favored the agricultural revival.
