Vernaccia di Serrapetrona

“Vernaccia di Serrapetrona” is a Protected Designation of Origin reserved for two types of sparkling wine: dry and sweet.

Grapes

Vernaccia di “Vernaccia Nera” grapes are used in the “Vernaccia di Serrapetrona” production, for a minimum of 85%, while the remaining part (maximum 15%) can be used for other red grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Marche.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

“Vernaccia di Serrapetrona” looks like a sparkling wine with a soft and balanced taste, which in the finish shows a pleasant bitterish aftertaste. It has a ruby color not too intense, which fades to garnet and is accompanied by a lively red foam, with a thin and persistent perlage. The aroma is aromatic and vinous, reminiscent of ripe red fruit, jams and withered flowers.

Grape production area

The area where “Vernaccia di Serrapetrona” is born is located in the internal part of the “Marche” region, 60 km away from the sea, and is included in the province of “Macerata”. It has a soul divided in half, between mountain and hill.

Specificity and historical notes

The ancient and deeply rooted tradition of the “Marche” region has led to the development of a process of vinification of “Vernaccia”, which is characterized by three different fermentations. The link between this sparkling wine and its territory is so strong that it turned out to be a real engine of development in the difficult period following the end of the Second World War, when the internal areas of the Marche suffered a very strong depopulation.
