Falerio

The Protected Designation of Origin "Falerio" includes the homonymous white wine and its Pecorino version.


Grapes

The "Falerio" is produced with grapes coming from the Trebbiano toscano grape variety, together with Passerina and Pecorino (each between 10% and 30%), for a share of between 20% and 50%. Other white grapes suitable for cultivation in the Marche region may also be added, either alone or in combination. The pecorino variant, on the other hand, must be made by reserving an 85% share for Pecorino, and a maximum of 15% for other non-aromatic white grapes.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Falerio, in its basic version, has a straw yellow hue, more or less soft, depending on the production. The aroma is slightly perfumed and the taste dry, sapid, harmonious and slightly acidulous. It reaches an alcohol content of 11.5% vol. In the Pecorino variant, on the other hand, the straw-yellow colour is enriched with greenish reflections. The taste is characteristic, typical, dry and slightly acidic. The minimum alcohol content is 12.00% vol.


Grape production area

The production area of Falerio wines is located in the south of the Marche, in the entire territory of the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo. An area that ranges from the coastal portion to a profile of medium-high hills. The climate, strongly influenced by the coast, is marked by a Mediterranean character.


Specificity and historical notes

The name Falerio betrays the Roman origin of the wine of all the wine production in the area. It derives, in fact, from the ancient city of Faleria, now Falerone.
