Terre di Chieti

The Protected Geographical Indication "Terre di Chieti" includes the following types of wine: white (also in the sparkling and passito types), red (also in the sparkling, passito and novello types) and rosé (also in the sparkling and novello types).


Grapes

The "Terre di Chieti" PGIs must be produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Abruzzo. In the productions with indication of vine, this must represent at least 85% of the grapes. On the other hand, when there are two vines indicated, they must represent 100% of the grapes used in winemaking, and each cannot constitute a share of less than 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10% vol), also sparkling, is straw yellow in colour, with an intense fruity aroma and a dry, savoury taste, while the Passito type (16% vol) has a colour tending towards amber with ageing. The Rosso (10.50% vol), also sparkling, is ruby red in colour, with a fruity bouquet and a harmonious and typical flavour. The Novello (11% vol) has violet reflections and a fresh and velvety taste, while the Rosso Passito (16% vol.) has a garnet colour, with an intense aroma and a sweet and velvety taste. The Rosato (10.50% vol.), also sparkling, has a pink colour with an intense, persistent bouquet and a typical dry flavour, while the Rosato novello (11% vol.) has a fruity aroma and a fresh, velvety taste. Finally, in the monovarietal variants, peculiar organoleptic characteristics emerge,


Grape production area

The production area includes the hilly area of the province of Chieti.


Specificity and historical notes

Polibio, a Greek historian, tells the story of the origins of winemaking in Abruzzo, in the context of Hannibal's victory at Canne in 216 BC.
