Val Polcèvera
The protected designation of origin "Val Polcèvera" is reserved for the following types of wine: White (with variants of quality Spumante wine, Sparkling wine and Passito), Red (also Novello and Sparkling wine), Rosé (also Sparkling wine), Bianchetta Genovese (basic and Sparkling wine) and Vermentino (basic and Sparkling wine). It is also possible to use the sub-area Coronata
Grapes
White wines are composed of at least 60% Vermentino, Bianchetta Genovese and Albarola, absolute or combined. Reds and rosés, on the other hand, are composed for at least 60% of Dolcetto, Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, absolute or combined. Grapes from similarly colored berry varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Liguria Region, may also be used to produce these wines, up to a maximum of 40%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
White wines have an alcohol content between 10% and 10.5% vol., which becomes 16% vol. for the Passito; the color is more or less intense straw yellow, sometimes with greenish reflections; the scent is delicate, persistent and fruity; the flavor is dry, savory, sometimes full and harmonious. The Spumante and Sparkling versions have a yellow and evanescent froth. The rosè, on the other hand, has an alcohol content of 10.5% vol., with a more or less intense rosé colour; the aroma is delicate and the taste dry and fresh. The Sparkling version is embellished with a fine and effervescent foam. The reds have an alcohol content between 10.5% and 11% vol., the color is ruby red, more or less intense, the scent is pleasant and the flavor parched and dry.
Grape production area
The production area of 'Val Polcèvera' goes from the plain to the middle of the hills. The soils have an average fine texture and a moderate depth, with good drainage.
Specificity and historical notes
The wine tradition in the area of "Val Polcèvera" is ancient and dates back to the pre-medieval period. The strong traditional bond, combined with the presence of land suitable for the cultivation of the vines, contribute to making the "Val Polcèvera" a product of high quality.
