Dugenta

The Protected Geographical Indication "Dugenta" identifies types of white, red (also in the Novello type) and Rosato wines.


Grapes

The vines suitable for cultivation in the "provincia di Benevento" are suitable for the production of wines belonging to the PGI "Dugenta".


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with the Protected Geographical Indication "Dugenta" are straw yellow in colour, emanating a fruity and floral perfume with a dry or sweet taste. The red version is characterised by a more or less intense ruby colour, accompanied by a floral, fruity aroma and a dry or sweet flavour. The red Novello, on the other hand, differs for its vinous perfume. Finally, the Rosato type has a more or less intense pink colour, with a fruity, floral aroma and a dry or sweet, balanced taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.00% vol. for white, 10.50% vol. for red and Rosato, 11.00% vol. for red Novello. 


Grape production area

The production area includes the entire administrative territory of the municipality of Dugenta, in the "provincia di Benevento", characterized by hilly terrain, between 200 and 650 meters high, interspersed with karst depressions on a flat surface.


Specificity and historical notes

The activity of vine cultivation in the Sannio area dates back to the 2nd century B.C. In Dugenta, an ancient oven was found for the production of amphorae for the conservation and trade of wine. Although the Samnite area was of fundamental importance for wine production in Roman times, according to studies by Attilio Scienza there are testimonies of wine producers of Sannio already in ancient Pompeii.
