Terre del Volturno

The wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Terre del Volturno" are wines of type White (also Amabile, Frizzante, Passito), Red (also Amabile, Frizzante, Passito, Novello) and Rosato (also Amabile and Frizzante).


Grapes

For the production of "Terre del Volturno" PGI wines, vines suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Caserta and Naples must be used. The specification of one of the varieties Aglianico, Asprinio, Casavecchia, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Pallagrello bianco, Pallagrello nero, Piedirosso, Primitivo, Sciascinoso, is reserved for wines produced for at least 85% with the corresponding vine, while the remaining 15% can be produced from another vine, berry of similar color, suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Caserta and Naples. With the specification of the vine Asprinio can also be produced sparkling wines.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Terre del Volturno" (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10.50% vol.) are more or less intense straw yellow in colour, combined with a delicate, fruity, characteristic perfume and a dry, fresh and harmonious taste. The Rosso (11.50% vol.) has a ruby red colour tending towards garnet with ageing, a pleasant, delicate, characteristic perfume and a dry, fresh, harmonious flavour. Finally, the Rosato (11% vol.) is more or less intense pink in colour, dry, fresh, harmonious on the nose and delicate, fruity and characteristic on the palate. Grape production area

The production area comprises the valley of the Volturno river.


Specificity and historical notes

Pliny the Elder, in the first century AD, praised the qualities of the wines of Campania Felix, such as Caulinum and Trebulanum.
