Pellaro

The Protected Geographical Indication "Pellaro", identifies the following types of wine: red (also in the novello type) and rosé. 


Grapes

The wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Pellaro", must be produced from grapes from black grapes suitable for cultivation in Calabria. Up to a maximum of 15% of the grapes used may come from white grapes suitable for cultivation in Calabria. 


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Pellaro",have a ruby red colour, accompanied by a vinous, characteristic perfume and harmonious, full flavour. The novello red wine, on the other hand, stands out for its intense red colour, combined with a pleasantly fruity aroma and a pleasant, harmonious taste. The pinkish colour is more or less intense, it exudes a fine, characteristic perfume and has a fresh, pleasant taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11. 00% vol. for new red wine and 13,00% vol. for red and rosé wine. 


Grape production area

The production area includes the southern part of Reggio Calabria, towards Punta di Pellaro, on the Strait of Messina. The large village of Motta San Giovanni, which has a variable altitude, dominates the entire area characterized by hills of 600-700 meters on which stand the vineyards. 


Specificity and historical notes

In ancient times, the area of Pellaro hosted the villa of Publio Valerio, where it is said that Cicero was also hosted during his escape. Since Roman times, agricultural activity, including the vine, has been one of the pillars of the local economy.
