Venezia Giulia
The "Venezia Giulia" Protected Geographical Indication is reserved for white wines (including sparkling wines), red wines (including sparkling and new wines) and rosé wines (including sparkling wines). In addition, the label must indicate the vines suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine.
Grapes
The basic types of "Venezia Giulia" PGI must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine. The specification of the vine is required if it is used for a minimal percentage of 85%. The specification of the vine is also required for the sparkling type and, only for the red berry, for the novello. For a complete list of the vines involved in the specification, please refer to the information contained in the product specification.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The white wine (9% vol.) is straw yellow to golden in colour, sometimes with greenish or copper shades; it has a pleasant, fine, sometimes aromatic scent; its flavour is also pleasant and ranges from dry to sweet. The red (9% vol.) and the red novello (11% vol.) have a ruby red colour, more or less intense, sometimes with orange shades; the aroma is vinous, pleasant, sometimes ethereal or fruity; the taste is harmonious, from dry to sweet. Finally, the rosé (9% vol.) has a more or less intense pink colour, with a vinous and pleasant aroma and a fresh, harmonious, dry to sweet flavour. In the case of the sparkling type, the minimum alcoholic content is equal to 10.50% vol.
Grape production area
The production area covers the entire territory including the provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Specificity and historical notes
At the beginning of the 16th century, the Republic of the Serenissima, which dominated Friuli, and the Habsburgs, which dominated Venice-Giulia, promoted the wine that was produced in these territories throughout Europe.
