The Protected Designation of Origin "Alba" includes two types of red wines: Alba base and Alba riserva.
Grapes
Both types of wine are obtained from Nebbiolo vines, present in a percentage varying between 70% and 85%, and Barbera, present in a percentage varying between 15% and 30%. There may also be grapes from other red grapes (max 5%), non-aromatic and suitable for cultivation in the Piedmont region.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The wines Alba base and Alba riserva (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 12.5% vol.) are deep ruby red in color, tending to garnet, have an intense odor and the flavor is dry, tannic, robust, harmonious and persistent.
Grape production area
Alba is produced in "Piemonte", in a characteristic area, historically known as "Albese", geographically delimited by the Langhe and Roero and characterized by the presence of the river Tanaro. The pedology changes in the two geographical semi-portions, passing from sandy or sandy-loamy soils to the more loamy-clayey ones.
Specificity and historical notes
The connection between the wine and its territory of origin is deep and rooted, both geographically and historically. The particular conformation of the soils of the area, the variable pedology, the presence of the river Tanaro and the ancient wine-growing tradition, create the favorable basis for a quality production.
