Alta Valle della Greve

The Protected Geographical Indication "Alta Valle della Greve" includes three types of wine: white, red (also in the Novello version) and rosé. The types are also produced with the additional indication of one or two vines.

Grapes

The types of white, red and rosé wine can be obtained from grapes from vines suitable for cultivation in Toscana, while the types with an indication of one or two varieties must be produced for at least 85% of the corresponding vines.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The PGI wines of "Alta Valle della Greve" white have a light colour, with reflections on the green, or straw yellow, from light to more intense. They have a simple, floral aroma and a fruity, full, harmonious flavour. The minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 10.00% vol. The red and Novello red versions are violet or ruby in colour, sometimes tending towards garnet. The aroma is simple and lively, the flavor is young, tannic, balanced. The minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 10,50 % vol. for red wine, 11,00 % vol. for Novello. Finally, the rosé type has a colour of slight intensity, with tones and odours that vary according to the vine variety used; the flavour is fresh and well-balanced. The minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 10,00 % vol.

Grape production area

The production area includes part of the following municipalities in the province of Firenze: San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Panzano, Campana, Mercatale Val di Pesa, Lamole, Greve in Chianti, Villa Fonzacchino, Chiocco.

Specificity and historical notes

The wines coming from the “Alta Valle della Greve” can be considered, like the area of ​​reference, as progenitors of the denominations of origin developed in the region in the last two centuries, which have acquired the fundamental traits, both in terms of agronomy and wine.
