Bardolino

The Protected Designation of Origin Bardolino is reserved for the wines Bardolino, Bardolino Classico, Bardolino Chiaretto, Bardolino Classico Chiaretto, Bardolino Chiaretto Spumante, Bardolino Novello and Bardolino Classico Novello.

Grapes

The "Bardolino" wines are composed of 35% to 80% Corvina Veronese (20% of the Corvinone variety is allowed instead of the same percentage of Corvina), 10% to 40% Rondinella and maximum 15% Molinara. The production of red grapes may also include up to 20% of the grapes grown in the province of Verona.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Bardolino" wines have a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume ranging from 10.5% to 11.5% vol. The base and the Classico have a ruby red colour, which tends towards garnet as it ages, the aroma is characteristic and vinous, the flavour is dry, savoury and harmonious. The Chiaretto base and Classico versions are pink in colour, tending towards garnet as they age, with a fruity and delicate aroma and a savoury and harmonious flavour. The Spumante version is enriched by a subtle foam, with a fine and persistent grain, which enriches the pink aspect; the smell is delicate and the taste soft and slightly acidulous. The Novello base and Classico have a light ruby red colour, the aroma is intense and fruity, the flavour is dry, soft and sometimes lively.

Grape production area

The production area of "Bardolino" is the hilly area, characterised by the presence of morainic reliefs, in the area adjacent to Lake Garda. Pedology is therefore influenced by the presence of these geological structures, which originate morainic deposits.

Specificity and historical notes

The wine-growing tradition in the "Bardolino" area has been evident since the Bronze Age. The particular pedology, combined with the presence of morainic reliefs, which create climatic conditions conducive to production, makes "Bardolino" a product of high quality food and wine.
