Bergamasca
The Protected Geographical Indication "Bergamasque" includes 5 types of wine: white, red, red novello, "Moscato" red and rosé.
Grapes
The white, red and rosé "Bergamasca" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes from one or more varieties suitable for cultivation in the Lombardia Region. When 85% of the grapes used come from only one type of vine, this must be expressly indicated (except in the case of the novello). In these cases, for the remaining 15%, the grapes of berry varieties of similar color, non-aromatic, suitable for cultivation in the Lombardia Region, can contribute, alone or together.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The white "Bergamasca" PGI wines have a straw yellow colour, accompanied by a fruity, floral perfume and a dry and savoury taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol. The red and novello variants (11% vol.) have a ruby red colour, with an intense and fruity aroma that goes well with a dry and harmonious flavour. The rosé and rosé Schiava, finally, are characterized by a pinkish cherry color. The former has a delicate, fruity aroma and a dry taste, while the latter exudes an intense, fruity aroma and a dry taste with a bitterish aftertaste. The minimum alcoholic strength is 11.00% vol. for the rosé and 10.00% vol. for the rosé Schiava.
Grape production area
The production area comprises the area bounded by the Adda and Oglio rivers in the province of Bergamo.
Specificity and historical notes
The geo-pedological conditions of the area concerned are favourable for the production of wines of great interest from the point of view of their analytical and phenolic characteristics: the soil of Bergamo, in fact, is a factor determined for the quality of wine production for all types of wine.
