Eloro

The "Eloro" Controlled Designation of Origin (PDO) refers to red and rosé wines, in some cases with a reference to the vine variety or with an indication of sub-area.


Grapes

Eloro wines are produced using grapes from vineyards composed, for at least 90%, of Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Pignatello vines (alone or in combination). Other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Sicily can also contribute to the vinification, but not beyond the limit of 10%. When the wines are accompanied by an indication of the vine variety, this must represent, on its own, the share of 90%. Finally, in the case of Eloro Pachino, the production must use 80% (minimum) of Nero D'Avola.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Red (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 12% vol.) is ruby red, sometimes with violet or garnet reflections, has a frank and robust, slightly ethereal aroma and a bitter, savoury, fresh and tannic flavour, with a pleasant dry aftertaste. The Rosé (11.5% vol.) is a grey pink with garnet reflections, a delicate aroma with a fruity aroma and a velvety, fruity and slightly acidic flavour. The Nero d'Avola (12% vol.) is red, with a vinous aroma and a dry flavour. The Frappato (12% vol.) has an intense aroma and a dry and harmonious flavour. The Pignatello (12% vol.) is an intense red, with a delicately vinous bouquet and a typical, dry and pleasant taste. Finally, the Pachino (12% vol.) is garnet ruby red, with intense brick red reflections for aging, the scent is generous and musky; the flavor is full-bodied, tannic, robust, with a velvety aftertaste.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with a narrow strip of land in south-eastern Sicilia. It is an area of plain and low hills, where the reliefs never exceed 300 meters above sea level and the climate is hot - dry.


Specificity and historical notes

The name Eloro is homonymous with that of an ancient city founded by Greek-Corinthian settlers in the seventh century BC. It was located at the mouth of the river Tellaro, on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea.
