Ghemme

The Protected Designation of Origin "Ghemme" is reserved for two types of red wines: Ghemme and Ghemme Riserva. There are also variants with indication of vineyard.


Grapes

For the production of Ghemme wines it is necessary to use mainly grapes from the Nebbiolo grape variety, with the possibility of allowing the Vespolina and Uva Rara grape varieties to compete, alone or in combination, but up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Ghemme" is a red wine with a ruby hue, embellished with garnet reflections. The aroma is characteristic, absolutely fine, pleasant and ethereal. The taste is dry, sapid and harmonious, with a pleasant bitterish background. It reaches a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 12.00% vol. The Riserva variant, on the other hand, has an intense ruby red colour tending towards garnet. In its olfactory notes it is very similar to the basic version. On the other hand, it stands out for its subtle, dry, harmonious taste, with a pleasantly bitterish background and a personality capable of combining austere and other velvety elements. The alcohol content is 12.50% vol.


Grape production area

The production area falls entirely within the province of Novara, divided between the municipalities of Ghemme and Romagnano Sesia. An area with hilly profiles, characterized by a combination of clayey, pebbly, loamy and sandy soils. Soils rich in minerals that give flavour to the wine.


Specificity and historical notes

The production of the "Ghemme" has known new vigor since the 70s of 1900. Its origins, however, are much older, so much so that it was already known at the time of Pliny the Elder.
