Girò di Cagliari

"Girò di Cagliari", identified by the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), is a red wine, also produced in the Liquoroso and Liquoroso Riserva versions.


Grapes

All types of "Girò" wine are produced exclusively with grapes from vineyards consisting only of the Girò vine. Within the limit of 5%, however, is also allowed the presence of different varieties, as long as they are suitable for cultivation in Sardegna.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Girò di Cagliari Rosso" has a more or less soft ruby hue. It has a fine and delicate smell, combined with a pleasant taste, which can range from dry to sweet. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 13.5% vol. In the Liquoroso and Liquoroso riserva variants, on the other hand, the alcohol content rises to 17.5% vol. This version has a red colour with different levels of intensity, which tends to orange as it ages. The smell is equally fine and intense and the taste pleasant, with a spectrum ranging from dry to sweet.


Grape production area

The production area is quite large and involves four different Sardinian provinces: Cagliari, Medio Campidano, Carbonia-Iglesias and Oristano. This area is very varied, both from the point of view of soil and climate.


Specificity and historical notes

The "Girò" is one of the most long-lived and renowned Sardinian wines. According to Mameli, it arrived on the island in the wake of the Spanish rulers. Its success, however, is mainly linked to the Piedmontese administration of 1700 and its viticultural policy.
