Greco di Tufo

"Greco di Tufo" is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) reserved for two types of wine: Greco di Tufo Bianco and Greco di Tufo Spumante. There is also the possibility of the indication of vineyard.


Grapes

The production of these white wines is made using at least 85% of grapes from the "Greco B" vine and, for the remaining part, the "Coda di Volpe bianco".


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

"Greco di Tufo Bianco" is a wine with a straw yellow hue, the intensity of which may vary. It has a pleasant and intense, fine and characteristic aroma. On the palate it releases a sensation of freshness and a harmonious and dry taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.50% vol. "Greco di Tufo Spumante" (12.00% vol.) is also straw yellow in color but embellished with greenish or golden reflections and accompanied by a fine and persistent froth. The aroma is characteristic, pleasant and has a delicate hint of yeast. The taste is savoury, fine and harmonious, typical of the extrabrut or brut type. 


Grape production area

The production area is located within the province of Avellino and extends to the border with that of Benevento. It falls, in its entirety, within the Regional Park of Partenio and the soils are mostly clayey, sandy or calcareous.


Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the area of Greco di Tufo is an activity with a long tradition and it is thought to be closely connected with the flow of the Sabato river and with the population of the Sabines, who introduced it in those places. In 1800 it experienced a particular expansion thanks to the discovery, in those areas, of large deposits of sulfur, which is widely used in the cultivation of vineyards.
