Malvasia di Casorzo d’Asti o Casorzo o Malvasia di Casorzo

The Protected Designation of Origin "Malvasia di Casorzo d'Asti" or "Malvasia di Casorzo" or "Casorzo". It contains the homonymous red wine and its variants Spumante and Passito.


Grapes

The "Malvasia di Casorzo d'Asti" wines are all produced with at least 90% of the grapes coming from the Malvasia di Casorzo variety, to which are added, up to a maximum of 10%, those of Freisa, Grignolino, Barbera and other aromatic varieties suitable for cultivation in Piemonte region.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The colour of "Malvasia di Casorzo d'Asti" wine can range from ruby red to cherry. The aroma is fragrant and with a characteristic aroma, combined with a sweet, soft and slightly aromatic taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.5% vol. Smell and taste similar to those of spumante (11% vol.), which is pinkish, enriched by a fine and persistent foam. Passito (15% vol.), on the other hand, shows a more intense red tone, accompanied by an intense, complex and characteristic aroma and a sweet and velvety flavour.


Grape production area

The production area is rather limited and divided between the Piedmontese provinces of Asti and Alessandria.


Specificity and historical notes

It is believed that the Malvasia vine (then Malvaxia or Greek grape) landed in Italy thanks to skilled sailors and Venetian traders.
