"Matino" Protected Designation of Origin includes the homonymous Rosato and Rosso wines.
Grapes
The prevalent grape variety whose grapes are used for the production of Matino wines is Negroamaro. The Malvasia nera and Sangiovese varieties can also be added within a limit of 30%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
Matino rosso has a ruby red hue, enriched with orange nuances as it ages. The aroma is vinous, combined with a dry and harmonious taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol. The same alcoholic strength also applies to Matino Rosato, which has an intense pink colour, on which, after the first year, golden yellow reflections are added. Even in this type of wine the aroma is vinous, but lighter, and the flavor is dry and harmonious.
Grape production area
The production area of Matino is rather limited: it is located entirely within the province of Lecce. The climate that characterizes it has strong temperature ranges, with mild winters and hot summers.
Specificity and historical notes
The places where Matino wines are produced represent one of the areas with the oldest winemaking tradition in Italy. Moreover, since 1930, this area is part of a region (Puglia) that is second, in the country, for the amount of wine produced.
