Montescudaio

The Protected Designation of Origin "Montescudaio" identifies the wines red (also Riserva), white, Cabernet franc (also Riserva), Cabernet sauvignon (also Riserva), Merlot (also Riserva), Sangiovese (also Riserva), Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Vermentino and Vin Santo.


Grapes

Red Montescudaio wine is produced from grapes coming from vineyards composed, for at least 50%, of Sangiovese grape. For white wine and Vin Santo, on the other hand, the same percentage is required for Trebbiano Toscano. In wines with an indication of grape variety, the latter alone must account for 85% of the total blend. Finally, it should be noted that, in all types, up to the missing quotas, the use of other grape varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Toscana, is allowed.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wine (11.5% vol.) has a tonality with intensity that can vary depending on the production and that, with aging, tends towards garnet; the smell is intense and characteristic; the taste is dry and harmonious, with good body. In the Riserva variant (12.5% vol.), the ruby red colour is enriched with garnet hues and the aroma becomes broad and complex, while on the palate the wine is dry, warm, harmonious and persistent. Montescudaio Bianco (11% vol.), on the other hand, has a more or less intense straw yellow aspect, combined with a fine, fruity bouquet and a dry, savoury and harmonious flavour. In the Vin Santo and single-varietal typologies, the basic organoleptic characteristics are enriched with further characteristics, all of which are described in detail in the product specification.


Grape production area

The production area, rather limited, is located in the province of Pisa and is characterized by an extreme variability of land, ranging from the hill to the coast.


Specificity and historical notes

The discovery of the so-called Cinerario di Montscudaio certifies that viticulture, in the area, was already widespread during the Etruscan period. A close bond that, over the centuries, has made this activity one of the main sources of wealth in the area.
