Negroamaro di Terra d’Otranto

The Protected Designation of Origin "Negroamaro di Terra d'Otranto"; includes red and rosé wines, the former also produced in the Riserva version, the latter in the Spumante and Frizzante versions.

Grapes

The "Negroamaro di Terra d'Otranto" wines must be produced with grapes from vineyards at least 90% of which are composed of the Negroamaro grape variety. Other non-aromatic black grapes may also be added, up to a maximum of 10%, provided they are suitable for cultivation in the Puglia region, for the Salento - Arco Jonico - Salentino area.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Rosso wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 12,50% vol) has a ruby colour, with varying degrees of intensity, enhanced by any reflections that tend to garnet as it ages; the aroma is pleasant and intense and is combined with a full and harmonious taste. The Riserva variant (13% vol) has the same organoleptic characteristics but a slightly higher alcohol content, equal to 13% vol. Rosato (12% vol) and its variants Spumante (11,50% vol ) and Frizzante (11,50% vol) have in common a more or less intense pink colour and a delicate, fruity aroma. The basic version, however, has a full, harmonious and lively flavor that instead becomes fresher in the spumante, which goes from extrabrut to extradry. The Sparkling, on the other hand, is harmonious on the palate, from dry to sweet.

Grape production area

The production area, which coincides with the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto, is an area characterised by two dominant geographical elements: the Salento peninsula and the Ionian arch.

Specificity and historical notes

The "Negroamaro" is one of the traditional grape varieties par excellence of Puglia, so much so that already in the sixth century it represented the almost exclusive cultivation of the southern area of the region.
