Nettuno

The Protected Designation of Origin "Nettuno" includes the wines White and White Bellone (both produced also in the Dry and Sparkling variants), Red (also Dry), Rosé (with Dry and Sparkling types) and Novello.

Grapes

The white "Nettuno" must be made from grapes from vineyards composed, for a share between 30% and 70%, Bellone vine (locally also known as Cacchione) and, for a share between 30% and 50%, from Trebbiano toscano. The single-variety variant, on the other hand, requires a minimum 85% of Bellone. The vinification of the reds and Novello, on the other hand, requires a blend of Merlot (between 30% and 70%) and Sangiovese (between 30% and 50%), while that of the rosés requires Sangiovese and Trebbiano, both with a minimum share of 40% each. In all the wines of the denomination it is possible to use, up to the missing percentages and not beyond the limits indicated by the disciplinary, other grape varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Lazio.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

All the wines of the denomination are fresh, dry and harmonious on the palate. Specifically, the Bianco (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11% vol.) is straw-coloured, with variable intensity, and has a fruity and characteristic aroma, absolutely delicate and pleasant. In the single varietal Bellone (11.5% vol.) the tonality is enriched with yellowish reflections and the aroma becomes vinous and characteristic, maintaining its delicacy. The Rosé (11.5% vol.) is a pink colour with different levels of intensity, sometimes turning towards ruby red; the aroma is delicate, fruity and winy. A more intense ruby red hue also characterizes the red wine (12% vol.), which shows a winy, characteristic, rather accentuated and persistent aroma, combined with a more full-bodied taste than the other types. On the other hand, the Novello variant (11.5% vol.) has a fruity and persistent aroma, combined with a lively fragrant flavour.

Grape production area

The production area coincides only with the municipalities of Anzio and Nettuno, just outside Rome.

Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the area of Nettuno was already present in Roman times, as evidenced by numerous works of Latin georgists.
