Province of Nuoro

The wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Province of Nuoro" are white wines (also sparkling), red wines (also sparkling and novello), rose wines (also sparkling).


Grapes

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Provincia di Nuoro" identifies wines produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna. In case of specification of the vine, the minimum quota of 85% of the corresponding grapes must be respected for the production. The following grape varieties are an exception: Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino, Vernaccia. Up to a maximum of 15% of other varieties can be used, with the same colour of the berry, suitable for cultivation in Sardegna.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Province of Nuoro", even sparkling, have a color from white to amber yellow paper, combined with characteristic smell and taste from dry to sweet. The red wines, even sparkling ones, have a colour ranging from light ruby red to garnet red, with a characteristic aroma and taste ranging from dry to sweet, while the new version is distinguished by its colour ranging from red with violet to ruby red reflections and its taste ranging from dry to distinctive. Finally, the rosé type is pale pink in colour, with a characteristic aroma and a dry to sweet flavour. The minimum alcohol content is 10% vol. for white, 10.50% vol. for white, red and rosé, sparkling and simple rosé, 11% vol. for red and red novello.


Grape production area

The production area includes a large area of central Sardegna from the Sardinian Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea.


Specificity and historical notes

In the famous "Carta de Logu" by Eleonora di Arborea (1392), the author stated that the Sardinians had already been using wild grapes since ancient times.
