San Ginesio

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "San Ginesio" includes the homonymous red wine and its Spumante variant, produced both in the Secco and Dolce versions.


Grapes

The "San Ginesio Rosso" wine is produced from grapes coming from vineyards composed, for at least 50%, of Sangiovese vine and for a further 35% of Vernaccia Nera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Ciliegiolo (alone or in combination). In addition, the use of other non-aromatic black grapes, suitable for cultivation in the Marche region, is allowed. Spumante, on the other hand, requires a base of Vernaccia Nera (minimum 85%) and other black grapes identified as above.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "San Ginesio Rosso" (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 1.5% vol.) has a pleasant ruby red aspect, which can be more or less intense, depending on the production; its aroma is characteristic and delicate and its taste harmonious. The same ruby colouring can be found in the Spumante (11% vol.), in this case embellished by purplish and garnet reflections and by a persistent, fine-grained froth; the aroma is fruity and the flavour characteristic, enriched by a pleasantly bitterish aftertaste in the dry version.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with a hilly area not particularly extensive, bordered by the rivers Chienti and Fiastra and the chain of Sibillini Mountains.


Specificity and historical notes

The oldest and most substantial testimonies of viticulture in the San Ginesio area are due to two Ginesini historians, Salvi and Severini, and to their work in transcribing the local chronicles.
