The protected designation of origin "Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese", also abbreviated as "Sangue di Giuda", identifies the homonymous red wine and its variants Sparkling wine and Spumante dolce.
Grapes
The wines of the denomination "Sangue di Giuda" are produced using grapes from vineyards composed of Barbera (between 25% and 65%), Croatina (between 25% and 65%) and Uva Rara, Ughetta (Vespolina) and Pinot Noir (maximum 45%, alone or in combination).
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
"Sangue di Giuda" is a wine with an intense ruby red colour and an alcohol content of 12% vol. The aroma is vinous and intense, with fragrances of spices and fresh fruit, and the palate is full, full-bodied, and sweet, in some cases lively and slightly tannic. The same organoleptic characteristics can also be found in the Sparkling and Sweet Spumante variants, enhanced by a lively foam, which is evanescent in the first type and persistent in the second.
Grape production area
The area of production of "Sangue di Giuda" falls within the wider area of the Oltrepò Pavese, which has mainly pre-Apennine morphological characteristics.
Specificity and historical notes
The name of the "Sangue di Giuda" is linked to a popular legend of the Oltrepò. It is said, in fact, that Judas, resurrected by Jesus after having hung himself, reappeared in the Oltrepò Pavese and saved himself from the lynching of the peasants, who recognized that they wanted to kill him, because he saved their vines, affected by a serious disease. To thank him, the winegrowers dedicated this particularly sweet and red wine to him.
