Vin Santo di Montepulciano

Three types of wine belong to the Protected Designation of Origin "Vin Santo di Montepulciano": basic version, Riserva and Occhio di Pernice.


Grapes

The basic and Riserva versions of "Vin Santo di Montepulciano" are composed of at least 70% white Malvasia, white Grechetto and Tuscan Trebbiano, either absolute or combined. Grapes from similarly coloured berry varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Toscana region, may also be added, up to a maximum of 30%. Occhio di Pernice, on the other hand, has a minimum of 50% Sangiovese and the remaining part is made up of grapes from vines suitable for cultivation in the Toscana region, up to a maximum of 50%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Vin Santo di Montepulciano" (vol. 17%) has a color from golden yellow to amber, the smell is intense, ethereal and characteristic of ripe fruit, the flavor is instead broad and velvety. The Riserva version (vol. 20%) has a more or less intense amber yellow colour depending on the sugar content, the aroma is intense and characteristic of ripe fruit, while the flavour is broad and velvety. The Occhio di Pernice (21% vol.), on the other hand, has a colour between amber and topaz, which becomes brown as it ages; the aroma is intense, rich, with ripe fruit, while the flavour is fine and persistent, with a sweet aftertaste.


Grape production area

The production area of ​​"Vin Santo di Montepulciano" is hilly and includes the entire municipal territory of Montepulciano. Fertile territory characterized by excellent soil variability and a favorable climate for vine cultivation.


Specificity and historical notes

The oenological culture and the winemaking tradition, in the area of ​​production of the "Vin Santo di Montepulciano", have developed and grown since the fourteenth century. The favorable climate and the pedological variety made sure that this path could be made and give a high value product.
