Campidano di Terralba o Terralba

Bovale, Bovale Riserva and Bovale Superiore are the three Sardinian red wines that belong to the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Campidano di Terralba" or "Terralba".


Grapes

The vinification of "Terralba" wines takes place from grapes coming from Bovale (also called Bovaleddu) and/or Bovale Grande vines, which must represent at least 85% of the total. The remaining share, not exceeding 15%, can be covered with other black grapes suitable for cultivation in Sardegna.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Terralba" wines mainly all have the same organoleptic characteristics, with significant variations only with regard to the intensity of color, greater in the variants Bovale Riserva and Bovale Superiore, and the minimum total alcohol content by volume (12% vol. for Bovale, 12.5% vol. for Riserva, 13% vol. for Superiore). It has a ruby red aspect and is accompanied by a vinous and intense aroma and by a characteristic, parched, savoury and full flavour.


Grape production area

The production area is located between the provinces of Oristano and Medio Campidano. The territory is mainly hilly or flat, with a Mediterranean climate.


Specificity and historical notes

The "Bovale sardo" is closely linked to the areas where the Terralba is born, because it has been cultivated there since very remote times. It is no coincidence that it has become fully familiar to the local population and therefore to the dialect. For this reason, there are many synonyms, also attested by historical texts: Muristellu, Muristella, Bovaleddu or Bovali pitticcu.
