Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo

"Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo" is a Protected Designation of Origin that includes two types of wine: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Superiore.


Grapes

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo wines are produced from grapes that must come from vineyards at least 85% of which are Montepulciano vines. The remaining portion, up to a maximum of 15%, can be made with other non-aromatic red grapes, provided that they are suitable for cultivation in Abruzzo.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The wine Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is distinguished by a pleasant cherry-pink color that, depending on the production, can be more or less intense. The olfactory notes that it releases denote a pleasant and finely vinous, fruity and intense smell. The taste is dry, soft and harmonious, with a pleasantly almond aftertaste. It has a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume at 12% vol. The Superiore variant, on the other hand, has a slightly higher alcohol content, equal to 12.5% vol., and a perfume enriched with spicy notes.


Grape production area

The production area is quite wide and includes the entire coastal strip and foothills of Abruzzo, with an inland insertion, in the central part, which also includes the plateau of "Alto Tirino", the Subequana Valley, the Peligna Valley and the Rovero Valley. The climate in the whole area is temperate.


Specificity and historical notes

The first historical trace of the presence, in Abruzzo, of the Montepulciano vine is offered by Michele Torcia, in his "Saggio Itinerario Nazionale Peligni", dated 1792.
