Riesi

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Riesi" identifies the wines Red, Novello, Rosé, White, Spumante, Vendemmia tardiva, Superiore and Superiore Riserva. There are also productions with the following grape varieties: Insolia, Chardonnay, Nero d'Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Grapes

As far as the grapes used in winemaking are concerned, the red Riesi grape must be made up of grapes from vineyards composed of 80% (minimum) of Calabrese (or Nero d'Avola) and Cabernet Sauvignon, alone or combined, flanked if necessary by other red grapes suitable for cultivation in Sicilia. The ampelographic base of the Riesi rosé, on the other hand, includes Calabrese (or Nero d'Avola) for a share between 50 and 75%, Nerello mascalese and Cabernet sauvignon for a further share between 25% and 50%, in addition to any other varieties identified as above. The whites require Ansonica and/or Chardonnay (minimum 75%), in competition with other white grapes. Finally, Superiore is produced with a minimum of 85% Calabrese grapes, together with other red grapes.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Riesi wines are rich in pleasant, harmonious, characteristic and elegant aromas, often further enhanced by fruity, floral and vegetable notes that recall the salient characteristics of the original vine. In the specification you can find a precise description of all the organoleptic characteristics associated with each type of wine covered by the designation.

Grape production area

Riesi wines are produced in a hilly area, where the vines are grown at heights between 250 and 350 meters above sea level and the climate is Mediterranean.

Specificity and historical notes

The name "Riesi" was recognized only in 2001, but the history of the wines of this area is much more dating and already documented by Professor Macagno in 1879, in the text "Una gita a Riesi".
