Scilla
The Protected Geographical Indication "Scilla", includes red wines (also in the novello typology) and rosé wines.
Grapes
The Scilla PGI wines must be produced from black grapes suitable for cultivation in the Calabria region. White grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Calabria up to a maximum of 15% can also contribute to the production.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
Wines with a typical red geographical indication "Scilla", are deep red in colour, accompanied by an intense, characteristic aroma and a typical harmonious flavour. The novello type, on the other hand, is characterized by a more or less intense red colour, a fruity, complex aroma and a pleasant, harmonious taste. The pink version is more or less intense pink in colour, combined with a fine, delicate and characteristic bouquet and a fresh, harmonious and pleasant flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol. for the new wine, while it is 12% vol for the red and rosé wines.
Grape production area
The production area includes the stretch of coast of the municipality of Scilla, characterized by the presence of intrusive and metamorphic rocks with sea terraces of a height between 0 and 400 m above sea level. .
Specificity and historical notes
The winemakers, with a patient and painstaking work started in ancient times, have selected the most suitable positions for the cultivation of the vine. Even today, in the districts, there are small terraces obtained with time and effort from the roughness of the mountain, which enjoy a particularly favorable climate thanks to the sea breezes.
